Park&Joy, a stress free parking experience. In Germany, around 60 cities have already adopted this app developed by Municipia S.p.A. – Engineering Group for T-Systems, which helps people find a parking space, providing a number of other benefits at the same time.
“Making mobility sustainable – explains Paolo Lanari, Director of Municipia Smart Mobility Business Unit, – means being able to transform cities into increasingly evolved and livable centers, capable of offering new and citizen-friendly services, with new, simple, fast and secure payment methods. Advantages, therefore, both from an economic, but also from the social and environmental point of view, for users and Public Administrations which have to deal with traffic and climatic emergencies on a daily basis. It is in this direction that Municipia is going, supporting local Governments in creating the so-called Augmented City, and it is in this direction that, in particular, our Smart Mobility projects for Italy and abroad are moving too“.
Benefits for users
There are several reasons why a motorist finds the app useful: assisted navigation, which suggests taking roads where the probability of finding parking is higher; being able to pay only the actual parking time, even by using your telephone credit should you not want to use a credit card or bank transfer; the opportunity to activate an insurance service which covers any damage to the vehicle which may occur while it’s parked and in order to access special discounts through coupons that can be distributed to friends.
“The real innovation nowadays is not so much that of providing users with the best technology on the market – says Lanari – but that of being able to intercept their real needs and to provide immediate answers to these needs. Thus technology and innovation are truly serving the city and they ensure maximum efficiency to citizens. Let’s start from this assumption: mobility today is developing in a profoundly changed context compared with only 5 years ago. Technology and connectivity are taking on a central role in pursuing institutional tasks and means and people will be increasingly interconnected, producing a mass of Big Data just waiting to be integrated and exploited with appropriate Business Intelligence algorithms in order to tackle the difficulties and challenges of mobility, thus improving the quality of life of people and of public service“.
How much does Park & Joy use data?
“Park&Joy – emphasizes Andrea Vecchi, Project Manager of Municipia, who followed the project – is not an app like the others. In fact, its operation is entirely based on data analysis, which allows the driver to see the route where there is the highest possibility of finding a parking space, both on-road and in structured parking lots, for which it is possible to verify the availability of places in real time. This means giving people the chance to manage their time in the best possible way”.
Particular attention was paid to the management of personal data in compliance with the GDPR. In fact, Park & Joy only collects the data strictly necessary for its operation and providing the license plate of the car, the telephone number and the payment method is the only requirement.
Benefits for the city
The data collected in cloud are made available to the Administrations and allow the latter to obtain information concerning the most “crowded” areas from the point of view of parking, the number of cars circulating during the various daily time slots, the parking time spans as well as when these occur more frequently. In practice, to gain an actual snapshot of urban mobility.

Municipia allows developing solutions which optimize the management of urban mobility, based on achieving economic, environmental and social sustainability, in order that our cities should have a low environmental impact, low energy consumption, low accident rates and higher productivity levels”.
“Acquiring the data made available by the application through specific reports, – adds Vecchi – allows local administrations to better manage their checks on parking payments, for example, by intensifying these at the times when parking is more frequent”.

“The app, already available for iOS and Android, is constantly evolving – concludes Andrea Vecchi – What we are working on now is the ability to take it on-board the car, installed together with the GPS navigation device available in the car, as well as to expand the number of German cities which use it and to extend Park & Joy to other countries too”.
